Clinical Research Manager - Motor Neuron (10 h/week)
Ref.: 23-253_SS_MP
About the research group
Neurologic Diseases and Neurogenetics
MOTOR NEURON UNIT: The unit, led by Dr. Povedano, is a reference center for motor neuron pathology in the region and nationally (CSUR), and is in the European reference network of rare neuromuscular disorders (ERN_NMD). The unit is an expert center in intrathecal treatment of adult SMA, too. In the past, Dr Povedano training in the disease was extended with two stays abroad (Columbia/NY, Dr. Mitsumoto; and California Pacific Medical center/SFCO, Dr. Miller). The unit's fellows also have been in NY, London, Utrech and Nijmegen; being each stay focused on a specific topic: clinical, genomic and ALS ultrasound studies, respectively. Nowadays, Dr. Povedano is on the board of the European Network TRICALS (https://www.tricals.org/es/), the European platform for the coordination of basic and clinical research in patients with ALS, as well as for conducting clinical trials; and being validated in different techniques. Our group is also adhered to European Network to Cure ALS (ENCALS). In turn, it is part of Project MINE, a European project for genome sequencing in patients with ALS and controls, as well as the subproject focused on the clinical and genetic study of African populations, which is carried out within the framework of the MINE project. In this sense, she collaborates with the University of Addis Ababa in the training of neurologists in EMG, carrying out training courses and studies in the field of motor neuron diseases. Dr. Povedano is, together with Dr. Orla Hardiman (Consultant Neurologist, and Head of Academic Unit Neurology of the Trinity Collage of Dublin); part of the LATAM group epidemiological studies in South America and in the “Precision ALS: Patient Data platform”, enabling a definitive precision medicine approach to new drug development in neurodegeneration. The Unit has a collection of samples from ALS patients registered in the “Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) [CSF, skin, stool, blood, DNA] which has allowed collaboration with basic groups that are part of CIBERNED and also with international groups. The IP is contributing to different projects and published works, establishing a consolidated network available in the future for new projects and collaborations. Among the different research groups, the IP has collaborated with Dr. Ammar al Chalabi group of the “Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute” of the King’s College London (SOPHIA); Dr. Leonard Van den Berg group of the University Medical Center of Utrech (project MINE); Dr. Marc Saez and Dr. Antonia Barceló of the research group on statistics, econometrics and health (GRECS) of the University of Girona and CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP); Dr. Manuel Portero Otín group of the IRB-Lleida-Universitat de Lleida; Dr. Rubén López Vales group of the “Dept. Biologia Cel·lular, Fisiologia i Immunologia” of the “Institut de Neurociències”- Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and CIBERNED; and Dr. Alberto García Redondo group, of the “Laboratorio de Investigación en ELA” of the Investigación Sanitaria Hospital 12 de Octubre.
