About the research group

The Neurometabolic Diseases Laboratory at IDIBELL, led by Prof. Aurora Pujol, is seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatician to join our multidisciplinary team. Our research combines clinical genomics, multiomics, computational biology, and experimental models to uncover the molecular basis of rare neurological diseases and accelerate the development of precision medicine.

Our laboratory has developed an internationally recognized clinical genomics platform that has achieved a diagnostic yield of over 70% in more than 600 families with rare neurological disorders through the integration of whole-exome and whole-genome sequencing, our in-house prioritization platform ClinPrior, and functional validation studies.

We integrate state-of-the-art genomics and multiomics approaches—including short- and long-read sequencing, transcriptomics, single-cell genomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and methylomics—to identify disease mechanisms, discover new disease genes, and develop novel therapeutic strategies. Our research also focuses on immunometabolism and the role of complex lipids in regulating innate and adaptive immune responses, with a strong emphasis on translating discoveries into clinical practice and drug repurposing. Our projects are supported by competitive national and international grants and extensive collaborations with hospitals and research networks.

 

About the role

As the group's Bioinformatician, you will play a central role in developing and maintaining the laboratory's computational infrastructure and supporting multiple research projects.

Your responsibilities will include:


• Developing, implementing, and maintaining reproducible bioinformatics pipelines for NGS and multiomics data.
• Analyzing and integrating WES, short- and long-read WGS, RNA-seq, single-cell RNA-seq, methylomics, proteomics, lipidomics, metabolomics, and GWAS datasets.
• Supporting genomic diagnosis through variant prioritization and interpretation.
• Contributing to the development and maintenance of our in-house platform ClinPrior.
• Integrating genomic and clinical data to identify novel disease genes, biomarkers, and therapeutic targets.
• Implementing AI- and machine learning-based approaches for genomic data analysis and clinical report generation.
• Managing genomic and clinical databases (including REDCap and SQLite) and ensuring FAIR data practices.
• Collaborating closely with clinicians, computational scientists, and experimental researchers across multiple projects.

 

Job requirements

 

Professional experience

  • Experience analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) and/or whole-genome sequencing (WGS) data analysis.
  • Experience with RNA-seq, single-cell transcriptomics, methylomics, or other multiomics technologies.
  • Experience working in Linux environments.
  • Experience with Git and reproducible computational workflows.

 

Education and training

  • MSc in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Genomics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.

 

Technical & soft skills

  • Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English.
  • Strong programming skills in Python and/or R. 

 

Languages

  • Good command of the English language

 

We will value, but not required

  • Experience with long-read sequencing (Oxford Nanopore or PacBio).
  • Knowledge of clinical genomics and variant interpretation, including databases such as gnomAD, ClinVar, OMIM, and HPO.
  • Experience using HPC environments, Docker/Singularity, and cloud computing.
  • Experience applying machine learning or generative AI to biomedical data analysis.
  • Familiarity with workflow management systems (Nextflow, Snakemake, or equivalent).
  • Interest in rare diseases and precision medicine.
