About the research group

The Intensive Care Medicine Department at Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge is a 50-bed, university-affiliated tertiary referral centre with a strong translational research programme. The group is affiliated with IDIBELL and CIBERES, and has an active international academic network. Research lines include mechanical ventilation, acute respiratory failure, respiratory monitoring (esophageal pressure, electrical impedance tomography, lung ultrasound), and critical illness–related organ dysfunction. The team regularly publishes in high-impact journals including AJRCCM and Intensive Care Medicine, and participates in multicentre international platform trials (e.g., PRACTICAL Platform Study).

 

About the role

The Research Fellow will contribute to ongoing clinical research projects in the field of critical care medicine, with a focus on mechanical ventilation and acute respiratory failure. Responsibilities include:

  • Participation in the design, implementation, and coordination of clinical research protocols.
  • Data collection, management, and analysis using standard epidemiological and statistical tools.
  • Contribution to the preparation of manuscripts and scientific communications.
  • Collaboration with national and international research networks and platform trials.
  • Support in the supervision and training of junior researchers and clinical fellows.
  • Participation in departmental research meetings and journal clubs.

 

Job requirements

Professional experience

  • Previous experience in clinical research in Intensive Care Medicine or related fields, including participation in clinical studies and/or clinical trials, data collection and management, and preparation of scientific manuscripts and publications.

Education and training

  •  Medical degree (Licenciatura o Grau en Medicina).
  • A specialist qualification in Intensive Care Medicine obtained through the MIR programme or equivalent will be considered advantageous 

Technical & soft skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency with standard research and statistical software (REDCap, SPSS, R, or equiva-lent).
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Commitment to scientific rigor and research ethics.

Languages

  • Good command of English (written and spoken), required for manuscript preparation and inter-national collaboration.
  • Catalan and/or Spanish proficiency desirable.

 

We will value, but not required

  • Active participation in national or international critical care society activities (SEMICYUC, ESICM).
  • Publications in indexed journals in the field of intensive care medicine.
  • Experience with mechanical ventilation monitoring techniques (esophageal pressure, EIT, lung ultrasound).
  • Enrolment in or completion of a doctoral programme.

Our institute

IDIBELL is a research center that integrates the biomedical research of the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), and the University of Barcelona in the Bellvitge Campus (UB), and the Viladecans Hospital (HV).
