About the research group

 

Tobacco Control Research Group

The main objectives of the Tobacco Control research group (Unitat de Control del Tabac in Catalan, UCT) are to foster the current knowledge and evidence on determinants and approaches to prevent and control tobacco use, as well as tobacco smoke and e-cigarette aerosol exposure in the population.

To achieve these objectives, the UCT develops interventions and epidemiological and implementation research, which includes projects such as the impact of passive tobacco exposure in the population, the use of markers to measure tobacco smoke and electronic cigarettes aerosol in the environment or biomarkers, or the implementation of new interventions such as smoke-free homes.

On the other hand, the UCT is also responsible for applied intervention projects such as the Catalan Network of Smoke-free Hospitals and health promotion services such as the smoking cessation clinic, which offers support to quit smoking to both employees and patients from ICO-IDIBELL.

The UCT’s research through the Consolidated Research Group on Epidemiology, Prevention and Tobacco Control (2021SGR00906) at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute. In addition, the UCT constitutes the core of the CB19/06/00004 Group of the CIBER of Respiratory Diseases, which is funded by Instituto de Salud Carlos III.

 

About the role

 

Job requirements

 

Professional experience

 

  • Previous experience in research, preferably in public health, epidemiology, or biomedical sciences.
  • Experience in statistical data processing, analysis, and interpretation.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary research projects, ideally related to tobacco control, cancer epidemiology or public health policies.
  • Knowledge of longitudinal and complex datasets (cohorts, repeated measures, hierarchical data) is highly desirable.

Education and training

 

  •  Higher Vocational Training in Clinical and Biomedical Laboratory or related.

Technical & soft skills

 

  • Proficiency in statistical software (R, SAS, Stata, or SPSS) and good command of spreadsheet and database tools (e.g. Excel, SQL).
  • Ability to organize, clean, and manage large and complex datasets, ensuring data quality and reproducibility.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and capacity to document and communicate results clearly (reports, tables, figures).
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Languages

 

  • Good command of English, both written and spoken.
  • Knowledge of Catalan and/or Spanish will be valued.

We will value, but not required

 

  • Masters degree in Biostatistics, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Bachelors degree in Economics or Statistics, or a related field. · Previous experience in data analysis using mixed models, longitudinal techniques or survival analysis.
  • Experience preparing scientific manuscripts, reports, conference abstracts or presentations.
  • Familiarity with reproducible research workflows (e.g. R Markdown, scripted analyses, version control).

Our institute

 

IDIBELL is a research center that integrates the biomedical research of the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), and the University of Barcelona in the Bellvitge Campus (UB), and the Viladecans Hospital (HV). The research focuses of IDIBELL are cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine. The selected candidate will join the final six months of the project PI21/00699, funded by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), supporting the tasks of data evaluation, cleaning, and analysis, as well as preparing reports and dissemination materials derived from the study.

 

This position is essential to ensure the proper completion of the project, as this stage requires intensive and specialized work in data management, validation, and both descriptive and analytical statistical analysis. The technician will also support the preparation of scientific outputs for conferences and journals.

 

The project leading to this labour contract has received funding from ISCIII under the project code PI21/00699.
