About the research group

Preclinical and experimental research in thoracic tumors (PReTT)

The PrETT group focuses on the study of novel therapeutic strategies in thoracic tumours combining basic molecular and patient-oriented translational research, bioinformatics, and also design and development of investigator-initiated clinical trials. We are a research group formed by both clinicians and basic researchers, with many international collaborations in both basic and applied research, the clinic and industry.

 

About the role

We are looking to incorporate a bioinformatician to support tasks related to the molecular diagnosis of patients with NGS, in the field of somatic cancer to carry out the following tasks:
   

• Supervise the NGS analysis for diagnostics routine: Samples matching agreement, review of preliminary results, error detection, results dissemination.
• Support to improve the degree of automation and to implement optimizations in stablished analysis workflows and processes.
• Support to solve specific issues and work to carry out the new pipelines developments.
• Attendance and participation in tasks coordination and decision-making meetings to discuss the new procedures and developments.
• Participate in associate research topics gradually identified over time.

 

Job requirements

Professional experience

  • Proven experience as bioinformatician (minimum of two years)

Education and training

  •  Biotechnology degree (or related discipline) 

Technical & soft skills

  • Fluent in Python and R/Bioconductor environments, and other programming languages Experience working with Linux systems and command line interface

Languages

  • Good command of the English language

We will value, but not required

  • Accredit the Catalan C1 level or higher

  • Knowledge of molecular biology and the main hallmarks of cancer.

  • Experience in germline and somatic NGS data analysis (exome data and targeted panels).

  • Knowledge for design, development and maintenance of existing NGS data analysis pipelines. Experience in visualization tools for genomics data Knowledge with Perl and Bash scripting Experience working with distributed and high-performance computing environments (HPC clusters, process queues such as SGE, etc.)
  • Experience using virtual environments, Docker and Singularity containers

  • Ability to use relational databases using free software like as PostgreSQL or MySQL

  • Ability to detect possible improvements in ongoing processes and develop strategies to make them more efficient

  • Ability to understand a problem or a new functionality and globally evaluate the implications in the entire system

  • Ability to divide a problem into small tasks and estimate the time needed to solve them

  • Ability and proactivity to solve problems efficiently and autonomously

  • Ability to continuously training in the field related to the work area

  • Fluent communication and high organization capacity in a multidisciplinary team

Our institute

IDIBELL is a research center that integrates the biomedical research of the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), and the University of Barcelona in the Bellvitge Campus (UB), and the Viladecans Hospital (HV). The research focuses of IDIBELL are cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine.
