25-036_SS_MP Bioinformatician - Hereditary Cancer group

REF: 25-036_SS_MP

About the research group

The candidate will have the opportunity to work within the DNA Mismatch Repair team of the Hereditary Cancer Group (https://hereditarycancergroup.com/team/dna-mismatch-repair-laboratory/), by Dr. Gabriel Capellá and Marta Pineda.
The overarching goal of group is to gain insight into the molecular basis of Lynch syndrome (LS) and Constitutional Mismatch Repair Deficiency (CMMRD) to personalize risk assessment to patients and relatives, as well as to individualize management regarding follow-up, treatment and prophylactic measures.
Successful candidates will join a dynamic, young and well-equipped research group with strong interactions and multidisciplinary team including bioinformaticians and wet lab researchers. The group offers a stimulating environment in which collaboration and exchange of ideas, techniques and pipelines is actively encouraged.

About the role

We are seeking a talented and motivated Bioinformatician to join our multidisciplinary team. Our research focuses on LS and CMMRD, two hereditary cancer syndromes caused by constitutional pathogenic variants in genes involved in DNA mismatch repair. LS is associated with an increased risk of colorectal, endometrial (EC), and other cancers. Despite intensive surveillance currently based on invasive and often painful procedures, interval tumors are common. CMMRD is a very rare and devastating syndrome that predisposes to a broad spectrum of tumors in the childhood with brain and hematological neoplasias being the most frequent. We aim to identify and characterize tissue-specific biomarkers in MMRD-associated cancers to improve surveillance and prevention strategies.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the projects developed in our group by contributing to the comprehensive characterization of biological samples from patients and disease models, integrating bioinformatics approaches and in collaboration with senior scientists.

The tasks of the position will encompass:

     - Developing and/or applying Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) pipelines: WES, RNA-seq, methylation arrays, gene panels.

     - Supporting advanced techniques such as scRNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics.

     - Performing post-analysis of -omics data, focusing on the identification of biomarkers and early events in disease progression.

     - Refining and automating in-house bioinformatics pipelines.

The selected candidate will work in a highly translational environment, closely collaborating with a multidisciplinary team offering a unique opportunity to contribute to research with clinical relevance while further developing their bioinformatics skills.
