Research Technician A specialist in electroencephalography

About the research group

Cognition and Brain Plasticity is an interdisciplinary Unit devoted to studying the nervous system’s structural and functional reorganization capacity, and its role in development, neurological injuries, learning, neurorehabilitation and/or interventional processes. We combine neuroimaging techniques with specific experimental paradigms in order to understand the mechanisms of plastic changes in the brain. This multidisciplinary goal can be seen in the research topics of the different groups in the unit, focusing on language learning and its dysfunctions, the dynamics of memory formation and reward processing, and motivation. The Unit’s groups consist of members with different trainings and backgrounds working in tandem to further their mutual lines of research. The team develops new analysis methods for basic research that have direct implications for clinical applications.

About the role

The research technician will be in charge with the following tasks of the project:

Experimental data acquisition and management: Programming experimental tasks and preparation of the materials involving synthetised speech for the artificial language paradigms, collecting project-specific behavioral, physiological, or electrophysiological signals.

Data processing and analysis: Preprocessing complex EEG datasets, power and intertrial phase coherence analysis, performing advanced statistical analyses including permutation tests and Bayesian analysis, and computational modeling aligned with the IDIBELL project work packages.

Methodological support and technical documentation: Drafting methodological reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and preparing research outputs for scientific dissemination and publication.

Maintenance and calibration: Assisting with the calibration and upkeep of the project's laboratory infrastructure and experimental equipment.

Job requirements

Professional experience

  • Experience in neural tracking analysis with EEG data in adults and children.
  • Experience in the setting up co-registration of behavioural and EEG measures in cog-nitive neuroscience experiments.
  • Hands-on experience in time-frequency electrophysiological data analysis, specifi-cally spectral power and Inter-Trial Phase Coherence (ITPC).
  • Proven track record in experimental design and implementation of auditory/lan-guage paradigms using PsychoPy.

Education and training

  • Higher Vocational Training (CFGS) in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, or closely related disciplines.
  • A university degree in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, or closely related disciplines will be considered an asset.

Technical & soft skills

  • Technical Skills:

o Proficiency in MATLAB-based analysis toolboxes, particularly FieldTrip (in-cluding cluster-based permutation tests).

o Demonstrated proficiency in statistical modelling in R or Python, specifically fitting and interpreting Linear Mixed Models (LMMs).

o Acoustic signal processing skills using Praat (speech synthesis, acoustic ma-nipulation, duration and intensity normalization, and pitch contour control).

o Proficiency in experimental programming using PsychoPy.

  • Soft Skills:

o Strong organizational and protocol documentation skills.

o Interpersonal sensitivity and effective communication skills tailored for test-ing developmental populations (infants and children) and their families.

o Ability to work autonomously while coordinating technical workflows within a multidisciplinary laboratory.

Languages

  • Good command of the English language
  •  Good command of Spanish.
  • Good command of Catalan (valued for direct communication with local infant/child participant cohorts and families).

We will value, but not required

  • Experience with Bayesian statistical modelling and inference.
  • Prior experience with infant EEG recording and artifact handling (e.g., motion and oc-ular artifacts in developmental cohorts).
  • Familiarity with speech segmentation and statistical learning paradigms (e.g., artifi-cial grammar learning and non-adjacent dependency processing).
  • Co-authorship in peer-reviewed scientific publications involving developmental cog-nitive neuroscience or auditory electrophysiology.
