Predoctoral Researcher - Hereditary Cancer
Ref: 23-207_R_MP
About the research group
Hereditary cancer
The candidate will have the opportunity to work within the Hereditary Cancer Group (https://idibell.cat/en/research/cancer-area/molecular-mechanisms-and-experimental-therapy-in-oncology-program-oncobell/hereditary-cancer/), under the supervision of Dr. Marta Pineda and Dr. Fátima Marín.
The overarching goal of the Hereditary Cancer group is to gain insight into the molecular basis of hereditary cancer, to personalize risk assessment to patients and relatives, as well as to individualize management regarding follow-up, treatment and prophylactic measures.
Successful candidate will join a dynamic, young and well-equipped research group with strong interactions and multidisciplinary research. The group offers a stimulating research atmosphere for young talents and an environment in which collaboration and exchange of ideas and techniques is actively encouraged.
About the role
Constitutional mismatch repair deficiency (CMMRD) is a rare and devastating childhood-onset cancer predisposition syndrome caused by biallelic mutations in mismatch repair (MMR) genes. The spectrum of CMMRD tumors is broad being high-grade gliomas, hematological malignancies and colorectal cancers the most frequently diagnosed tumors. Accurate and prompt diagnosis is critical to intensive cancer screening and effective treatment. The severity of CMMRD is highlighted by the fact that patients do not survive until later life, emphasizing the requirement of novel tools for cancer risk surveillance and prevention in CMMRD individuals.
The predoctoral researcher will be involved in a project aimed at improving identification and clinical management of CMMRD syndrome by:
-
Performing a CMMRD screening in pediatric cancer patients by highly sensitive microsatellite instability (MSI) analysis in blood
-
Evaluating the clinical utility of MSI quantification in liquid biopsy as a non-invasive tool for early detection of cancer and monitoring response to treatment
During the time in our laboratory, the selected candidate will benefit from a mentoring plan and substantial infrastructure to support his/her development. In addition, the predoctoral researcher will join the PhD program included in the Master of Biomedicine, University of Barcelona, awarded with the Quality Mention by the Ministry of Education, Spain (http://www.ub.edu/estudis/es/mastersuniversitaris/biomedicina/presentacion).
