About the research group

Cardiovascular Diseases Research Group (BIO-HEART)

Biomedical research group on Heart Disease BIO-HEART is a renewed emerging group part of the Program of research in inflammatory, chronic and degenerative diseases. It comprises health professionals associated with the management of cardiovascular diseases, as basic postdoctoral researchers, clinical cardiologists, interventional cardiologists, specialized nurses, community family medicine professional and cardiologists specialized in imaging techniques for diagnosis of coronary artery disease and heart failure. The majority of the professionals are part of the Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge and first care community area DELTA. BIOHEART background is a strong clinical network of senior researchers in heart failure and coronary diseases working on multidisciplinary teams that have transferred the scientific knowledge outputs obtained from previous research projects to redesign the care of patients with cardiovascular diseases.

About the role

In the research and development process, experiments are carried out (preclinical and clinical, in the case of drugs, or biological or plant species improvement, etc.), in which the design of the trial and the processing of the data obtained is critical to ensure the reliability of the results.

The Data Scientist is dedicated to the design of experiments and the analysis of results, collaborating in multidisciplinary teams with researchers to refine the generated data.

  • Specifically we're looking for a new generation data analyst, "Biostatistician / Data Scientist" profile. This professional uses both the technical analytics capabilities and tools and intuition to process large data packages, macrodata, data warehouse and databases, to answer complex questions, anticipate trends and create reports that serve to make analytical decisions in the group's high research management. In essence, a business intelligence professional who, through qualitative and quantitative analyses, transforms the data generated by the group into elements and knowledge of added value. However, it must also be able to manage the data and monitor the different data systems that we have access to (or can have) in order to organize, store and analyze the data as efficiently as possible.Show results in a way that is understandable. Use graphics, visualizations and any tools that improve understanding of the results obtainedMaster and/or graduates in Bioinformatics and/or Biostatistics

The main challenges (s)he has to be able to face are:

  • To provide biostatistical support to the research group in active and future projects, results analysis, design and methodology
  • Consultation and timely advice on biostatistics and data analysis to researchers
  • Identification of problems that provide an opportunity for the research group
  • The first phase of a Data Science project is to identify the general problem affecting the needs or problems of patients or healthcare professionals in the area of cardiology. The global vision allows information to be gathered and activates the curiosity and intuition on the work of a Data Scientist
  • The determination of correct data series and variables
  • Identify and activate the collection of large and small series of structured or unstructured data from various sources
  • Clearing data and validation to ensure homogeneity and relevance
  • Data mining: data cleaning, validation, normalization and aggregation
  • Developing and applying models and algorithms in the identified data series
  • Apply their skills by enabling algorithms that extract relevant data
  • Data analysis to identify patterns and trends
  • Use the results obtained for the future choice of study objectives
  • Interpretation of data to discover solutions and opportunities
  • Interpreting results and identifying behaviors, needs, scientific trends aligned with clinical and patient needs to generate opportunities not yet covered
  • Communicate results using display techniques

The work of a Data Scientist is essential in the digital transformation process that we are currently experiencing, as his/her work is based on the development of processes and design of projects and results based on professional needs and patient data.
