About the research group

Image diagnosis and nuclear medicine

Nuclear Medicine Department in HUB (Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge) has significant accumulated experience in diagnostic imaging field and also in nuclear medicine therapies, being a point of reference in Catalonia and Spain.
Nowadays it has been in a more close contact with Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) due to the increase of clinical trials in early phases.
In the diagnostic field, Nuclear Medicine Department in HUB it was the first center to have the first public PET/CT installed in Spain in 2003. The increase of demand for PET scans motivated the installation of the second PET/CT in 2016, making it the first public center with two PET/CTs. It is a pioneer in PET/CT studies, currently performing more than 9,000 PET scans per year, serving a wide geographical area of Catalonia, more than 15,000 scintigraphic scans and more than 1,000 leucocytes/erythrocytes radiolabellings. At the end of 2022, it will become the center of High Diagnostic Accuracy with the installation of the first PET/MRI equipment in Spain, which will serve the entire Catalan public system, generating a unique portfolio.
In the field of metabolic therapy, the HUB currently has a short-stay metabolic therapy room for outpatients and two metabolic therapy rooms for inpatients located at the Duran i Reynals Hospital (ICO-Hospitalet). He was one of the participants, starting in 2013, in the pioneering international study NETTER-1, the first to demonstrate on a large scale the positive effects of [177Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE in neuroendocrine tumors. Since 2017, a conventional care program for the application of this treatment has been in place, coordinated with oncology specialists from the ICO-Hospitalet. It has currently reached 100 conventional healthcare treatments, to which must be added about fifty treatments carried out as part of clinical trials. This boom means that nuclear medicine therapies with new radiopharmaceuticals are also beginning to be used in prostate cancer and are being tested for breast, lung, esophagus, pancreas and glioblastoma, among others, in which the nuclear medicine service of the HUB is participating.
ICO-L’Hospitalet is a reference hospital for the clinical research in cancer. Their two units (UIC and UFF1) have been participating in 596 clinical trials with active recruitment or with current activities during 2022 and 681 patients decided to participate in them. Many of these trials are testing the most promising therapies in cancer and investigators involved in them are specialized and up-to-date with the latest advances in new treatments. UIC and UFF1 units they are the best professionals who carry out the most demanding clinical trials.
