Our institute

IDIBELL is a research center that integrates the biomedical research of the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO), and the University of Barcelona in the Bellvitge Campus (UB), and the Viladecans Hospital (HV). The research focuses of IDIBELL are cancer, neuroscience, translational medicine and regenerative medicine. Research, innovation and society are the pivots on which researchers work every day in order to improve the quality of life of citizens.

IDIBELL is located in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, south of Barcelona. It is a member of the Campus of International Excellence of the University of Barcelona (HUBc) and Research Centers of Catalonia (CERCA). In 2009, it became one of the first five Spanish research centers accredited as a health research institute by the Health Institute Carlos III. In 2015, the European Commission recognized IDIBELL with the 'HR Excellence in Research' award, which identifies IDIBELL as a provider and supporter of a stimulating research work environment.


About the research group/unit

The candidate will join the Biobanc HUB-ICO-IDIBELL.

The HUB-ICO-IDIBELL Biobank is a leading biomedical research infrastructure that plays a key role in advancing translational and precision medicine by processing, preserve and manage high-quality human biological samples and associated data for biomedical research. It supports researchers by ensuring that samples obtained from the Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB), the Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO) and collaborating healthcare centres are managed according to the highest scientific, ethical and legal standards.

Authorised by the General Directorate of Health Planning and Research of the Catalan Government and registered in the Spanish National Registry of Biobanks (Instituto de Salud Carlos III), the Biobank operates in full compliance with Spanish biomedical research regulations (Law 14/2007 and Royal Decree 1716/2011). In addition, the Biobank is certified under the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System, reflecting its commitment to excellence, continuous improvement and the highest standards in the management of human biological samples and associated data. It is also a member of the Spanish National Biobank Network, contributing to collaborative research initiatives at both national and international levels.

The Biobank works in close collaboration with the Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CEIm/CEIC) of Bellvitge University Hospital and its External Scientific Committee, ensuring excellence in governance, quality management and ethical oversight.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated Laboratory Technician to join the HUB-ICO-IDIBELL Biobank team. The successful candidate will contribute to the day-to-day operation of the Biobank, ensuring the highest standards of quality, traceability and regulatory compliance in the management of human biological samples and associated data. The position also offers the opportunity to participate in the continuous improvement of laboratory processes and quality management within a dynamic biomedical research environment.

Main responsibilities

  • Process, preserve and store human biological samples following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including liquid sample processing (urine, blood, LCR, etc) and cryopreservation of PBMCS.
  • Perform molecular techniques such as DNA and RNA extractions from liquid or solid samples, and basic histology techniques including FFPE sectioning and routine stainings.
  • Ensure the correct registration, traceability and management of biological samples and their associated data using the Biobank information management systems.
  • Provide technical support and assistance to researchers and Biobank users, responding to enquiries and facilitating access to samples and related services in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform routine quality control procedures and contribute to maintaining the quality standards of Biobank operations. Contribute to the management of laboratory equipment, consumables and inventory.
  • Participate in the implementation and continuous improvement of the Biobank Quality Management System (ISO 9001:2015), including quality assurance and process improvement activities.
  • Receive, verify and register informed consent documentation in accordance with ethical and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate the preparation, documentation and shipment of biological samples for national and international research projects, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Support the implementation and optimisation of laboratory techniques, workflows and technical procedures when required. Provide support in additional operational and management activities of the Biobank as delegated by the Biobank Coordinator.

 

Job requirements

Professional experience

  • At least 2 years of demonstrable experience in a biobank, research laboratory or other biomedical laboratory performing similar technical responsibilities.

Education and training

  •  Laboratory technician CFGS or similar in Life Sciences / Laboratories FP2 certificate. 

 

Technical skills

  • Hands-on experience in the processing and handling of human biological samples.
  • Practical experience with histological techniques, immunohistochemistry, basic molecular biology techniques and cell culture.
  • Experience working under quality management systems and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in a laboratory environment will be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information management and sample traceability systems, including database management.
  • Strong laboratory management, organizational and time-management skills, with excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
