Predoctoral Researcher - Hereditary Cancer

Ref.: 24-103_R_GC

About the research group

The DNA Mismatch Repair team within the Hereditary Cancer Research Group (https://hereditarycancergroup.com/team/dna-mismatch-repair-laboratory/), led by Dr. Gabriel Capellá and Dr. Marta Pineda, is dedicated to advancing the healthcare of patients with mismatch repair-associated hereditary cancer syndromes, including Lynch syndrome and Constitutional Mismatch Repair Deficiency (CMMRD).

Hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes exemplify both the benefits and challenges of genomic medicine. Lynch syndrome, which was molecularly defined in the 1990s, has benefited from scientific advancements that have enabled the identification of at-risk individuals, the refinement of diagnostic algorithms, and partial elucidation of the molecular mechanisms behind neoplastic transformation. These advances have contributed to the long-term survival of carriers who undergo appropriate surveillance. However, challenges persist, such as the need for more personalized follow-up, which could enhance the effectiveness of current surveillance strategies. The group is investigating new approaches to personalize endometrial cancer surveillance to minimize the impact of risk-reducing surgeries and improve the quality of life for these patients.

Successful candidates will join a dynamic, young, and well-equipped research team with strong interdisciplinary collaboration. The group fosters a stimulating research environment that encourages the exchange of ideas and techniques, making it an ideal setting for young researchers to thrive and innovate.

About the role

The successful candidate will be involved in a project focused on identifying novel biomarkers associated with progression to Lynch syndrome-related endometrial cancer. The specific responsibilities include:

  • Identifying early molecular and histopathological events in MMR-deficient endometrial tumorigenesis
  • Characterizing the differential interactions between tissues and immune cells during malignant transformation
  • Assessing the clinical utility of identified early biomarkers to develop new personalized gynecological follow-up strategies

The candidate will work with cutting-edge technologies to characterize molecular events in endometrial carcinogenesis, under the guidance of Dr. Marta Pineda and Dr. Fátima Marín. This role offers the opportunity to engage in highly translational research within a multidisciplinary team, utilizing patient-derived samples to contribute to significant advancements in the field.

Throughout their time in the laboratory, the candidate will benefit from a comprehensive mentoring plan and substantial infrastructure to support their development. Additionally, the Predoctoral Researcher will be enrolled in the PhD program associated with the Master’s in Biomedicine at the University of Barcelona, which has been awarded the Quality Mention by the Ministry of Education, Spain (http://www.ub.edu/estudis/es/mastersuniversitaris/biomedicina/presentacion).
